Patriot Insecticide Ear Tag For Cattle (OP)

Patriot Insecticide Ear Tags For Cattle are for effective control of buffalo fly, including control of pyrethroid-resistant fly populations on beef and dairy cattle.

One Patriot Tag should be applied per animal (1 ear only) for up to 4 months of control.

Patriot is impregnated with Diazinon, an anticholinesterase insecticide of the organophosphate (OP) chemical class. The insecticide is slowly released from the tag to protect cattle against buffalo flies for up to 4 months.  With the added convenience of a one-ear tag system, Patriot is easier to apply and economical.

We have bought a few different brands of these tags but always go back to Patriot as these give the best result in keeping the flies at bay and are easy to apply and remove

Unfortunately the tags haven’t worked for our mob here on the south coast of NSW. Even after a couple of weeks, there were still so many flies. Was really disappointing. I won’t be purchasing more of these. A big waste of money.

I have used these Patriot tags for several years. This year I have had a significant amount of failures with the white center falling out of the tag when applying also within two day of placing the tags on the cattle we have lost three tags. Not a great strike rate. Will try another make next time

Initial knock down was better than expected. Now after 8 weeks I am seeing the return of flies. Am monitoring to review the continued use of tags vs back rubbers and sprays.

Hi Scott and thanks for your review. As we discussed on the phone, the tags will not completely eliminate all flies and numbers of approximately 200 flies per beast are considered acceptable by QDPI. We look forward to hearing an update from you if the fly numbers continue to increase to this level and will be more than happy to get the manufacturer involved to see what has gone wrong if the tags are failing to keep numbers at an acceptable level. The feedback on the Patriot Tags is generally very good with customers happy with the protection and longevity they provide, so we would like to get to the bottom of this one.

Directions for Use:

  • Patriot can be easily applied using an Allflex applicator with a universal pin.
  • Easy to apply with a UTT3S Tag Applicator or LazaMatic applicator.

Critical Comments:

  • Removal of tags after 4 months will ensure that buffalo fly populations are not exposed to sub-lethal doses, which may increase the chance of resistance.

  • The level & duration of control may be reduced under high fly pressure.
  • The whole herd is to be treated concurrently.

Application Of Patriot Buffalo Fly Tags

It is recommended to treat cattle with ear tags during the peak fly season ie. when more susceptible cattle show ‘fly worry’, or when there are more than 200 flies per beef animal or 30 flies per dairy cow.

To prolong the effectiveness of the chemical groups available for fly control, ensure that you rotate your ear tags from year to year (Pyrethroid / Organophosphate). Be mindful of using an alternative chemical group for fly control pre- and post- Patriot application to an organophosphate (if further fly control is required) to delay the development of resistance.

There are no indications that Patriot Insecticide Ear Tags For Cattle impact dung beetle populations.  Fly tags rely on the movement of the ears back and forwards against the coat, not being taken into the animal's internal system and passed through dung.

Patriot Insecticide Ear Tags for Cattle are only registered to protect cattle against buffalo flies for up to 4 months. Removing the tags after the efficacy claim period (3-4 months) expires is critical. This will ensure that buffalo fly populations are not exposed to sub-lethal doses, which may increase the chance of resistance. You should refer to the directions of use supplied with your tags. To effectively manage the development of insecticide resistance in Buffalo flies, rotation strategies of a different mode of action with a different active ingredient with each new season are essential.
